The Iowa DOT and HR Green Announce Successful Funding Efforts for I-380 Interchange in Cedar Rapids
The Interstate 380 interchange with Wright Brothers Boulevard in Cedar Rapids is set to undergo a $147 million reconstruction, recently receiving a significant boost of $57.3 million in federal infrastructure funding. The Iowa DOT partnered with HR Green and HDR to develop the grant application that ultimately was successful in landing the grant from the U.S. DOT Rural Grant program.
HR Green’s Stacy Woodson says “It’s thrilling to help the Iowa DOT achieve their goal and be a part of the team that was awarded one of these highly competitive grants. This project will modernize the system providing mobility, safety, and capacity in a rapidly expanding area of Cedar Rapids.”
The project, scheduled for completion in 2027, involves widening the interstate to six lanes and reconfiguring the Wright Brothers Boulevard interchange (illustrated below). This interchange, a crucial exit to The Eastern Iowa Airport and a growing area with increased manufacturing, warehouses, and housing, will be transformed into a “diverging diamond” interchange to enhance traffic flow (an example of a completed Diverging Diamond Interchange in New York is shown in the photo above). With the additional federal funding, along with contributions from federal, state, and city sources, the project is now fully funded.
