HR Green Receives ACEC Special Achievement Award for Souwanas Trail Improvements

HR Green, Inc. is honored to receive a ACEC Special Achievement award for the Souwanas Trail Improvements project for the Village of Algonquin. The ACEC awards recognize engineering firms and their clients for projects that demonstrate an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement, and value.
The project addressed significant infrastructure challenges along Souwanas Trail, where deteriorating roadway conditions, limited drainage capacity, and inadequate pedestrian facilities were causing safety and efficiency issues.
Our team led the project’s design and construction efforts, implementing multiple improvements:
- Designed a new dual-system storm sewer to provide in-line detention and handle a 50-year rainfall event, mitigating long-standing flooding concerns.
- Upgraded the existing sewer line, critical to serving over 6,000 residents and businesses, to alleviate capacity issues and prevent backups.
- Installed a new sidewalk network to create a safe connection between the Prairie Trail and Sandbloom Road bike path. Additionally, a pedestrian-activated flashing crosswalk system was added to enhance safety.
- Replaced an outdated metal culvert with a three-sided culvert to accommodate a 100-year storm event.
These improvements address flooding issues, reduce impervious surfaces, provide enhanced utility capacity, and improve safety along the trail, benefiting both the community and the surrounding environment.
The award celebrates HR Green’s commitment to building communities and improving lives through innovative infrastructure solutions.
