ADA Compliance in the Construction Phase

Kyle Leonard — Hr Green, Inc.

Before the start of any project, HR Green construction professionals verify that the design will fit the existing field conditions. In some cases, as such with making sidewalks ADA compliant, the application of design standards is the responsibility of the construction engineer.

On a recent 5 mile urban patching and resurfacing project, part of the design included modification of intersections to facilitate ADA standards throughout two contiguous cities. In advance of the work, HR Green construction engineers surveyed, measured and documented the existing configuration of 120 corners throughout the project.

Utilizing combinations of ten ADA Sidewalk Standards representing various general conditions, the team produced individual details for the construction of sidewalk and ramps at each corner to fit existing site conditions. This work was performed with cost control and progress as primary goals, and all details were produced without the need for purchasing right-of-way or encroaching on private property. HR Green provided layout at each location, tested concrete and inspected the contractor’s work to see that it was built in accordance with federal ADA guidelines.
