Challenge
The Briar Branch area faced a high risk of structural flooding due to inadequate drainage infrastructure along the 6,200-foot channel from Gessner Road to Oak Tree Drive.
Solution
The Briar Branch (W140-01-00) Channel and Straws Improvements project introduced comprehensive storm drainage improvements to mitigate flooding. Key components included:
- Installed reinforced concrete box (RCB) culverts ranging from 7-ft x 7-ft to 10-ft x 8-ft along the entire length of the channel. Storm sewer (straw) improvements added 2,600 linear feet of lateral drainage at five locations.
- Reconstructed the Bunker Hill Road crossing, upgrading from dual 7-ft x 7-ft RCBs to triple 8-ft x 8-ft RCBs, increasing the channel’s capacity and flow efficiency.
- Constructed a dual-use road to provide both maintenance access and recreational opportunities.
- Built two new pedestrian and bicycle crossings at Witte Road and Bunker Hill Road.
- Planted trees and vegetation along the project limits.
Benefit
The Briar Branch upgraded drainage improvements significantly reduced the risk of structural flooding, minimized property damage and disruption, and enhanced community access.
