HR Green Selected to Assist with Phase 1 Professional Engineering Services for Riverfront Crossings Park
HR Green will act as a subconsultant to Confluence to provide professional services for the Riverfront Crossings Park Phase I project. The overall project includes conversion of a former wastewater treatment plant site to a City park complex. The completed improvements will allow the City of Iowa City to transform the riverside area and enhance Ralston Creek as a community asset, further expanding the recreational opportunities available to the Iowa City community for years to come.
Aaron Gwinnup is HR Green’s lead engineer for stream design, ecosystem restoration, and artful stormwater “best management practices”. He has devoted his career to employing natural, robust solutions to hydraulic engineering problems. The synthesis of these skill sets along with those of the larger project team creates a balanced and capable crew, personally invested in the goals of this project.
“We are excited that the City of Iowa City has chosen the team of Confluence, HR Green, and Rohrbach and Associates for design and implementation of this landmark revitalization project” said Project Manager Aaron Gwinnup. “The conversion of this former wastewater treatment plant to an interactive stream and wetland park will be the critical impetus needed to kick start redevelopment of the whole area into a vibrant extension of downtown which faces and celebrates the City’s water resources.
With the concept plan finalized, the design team will conduct preliminary site investigations including drone-based topographic survey, geotechnical investigations, and floodplain permitting requirements of the proposed plan as well as collection of background data required for design of Phase 1 elements. The phase I project includes preliminary and final design of site grading, a five acre constructed “off-channel” wetland, stream re-meandering and naturalization, trail and boardwalk overlooks, and stream and river access points. HR Green’s role involves development of plans and specifications, providing bidding assistance, construction administration, and limited construction observation.
