The Elevator Safety and Regulation Act (225 ILCS 312) was established in January 2003 to provide public safety to riders of conveyances. Its implementation happened in May 2007. Prior to the Act, each local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) enforced public safety through their adopted building code. In many areas of the State, no enforcement occurred.
