Sioux City Awarded Federal Brownfields Grant

May 13, 2021

HR Green’s ongoing commitment to helping clients leverage U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) funding for brownfields revitalization projects resulted in the City of Sioux City, IA securing an FY21 Community-Wide Assessment Grant. The $300,000 award allows the City to identify, prioritize, assess, and conduct cleanup planning on blighted properties within and surrounding their historical Stockyards area. Targeted brownfields sites include a fertilizer plant, former metal fabrication plant, and former hospital.

EPA defines a brownfield as property for which the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. The agency estimates there are more than 450,000 brownfields in the United States.

HR Green has a long history of working with Sioux City to address potentially impaired properties within the community. This relationship dates back over two decades extending to the initial pilot program in 1999. Past project highlights include transitioning 10 acres of declining industrial properties into a mixed-use development featuring residential units, office space, a movie theater, and a public plaza. The “Fourth Street Place” project received EPA Region 7’s prestigious Phoenix Award in 2009. To date, HR Green’s grant writing assistance has obtained approximately $3.7 million in federal brownfields funding for Sioux City.

Sioux City was one of only two cities in Iowa to receive EPA’s Brownfields Program funds during this cycle. Since the initiative began, HR Green has helped Iowa municipalities and regional planning agencies secure $13.6 million in these grants.
