ACEC of Illinois Honors HR Green With Engineering Excellence Awards

Hr Green, Inc.

Projects in Water and Transportation Categories

HR Green, Inc. (HR Green) has received two Engineering Excellence Awards from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Illinois. The awards competition recognizes projects of engineering achievement by Illinois consulting engineering firms. Entries are judged on the basis of engineering excellence, the degree to which the client’s needs are met, and the benefits to the public welfare.

HR Green received a Water Resources Merit Award for the “Carpenter Creek Stream Restoration” project and a Transportation Merit Award, along with TADI and Kimley-Horn and Associates, for the “US 30, Granart Road and Dugan Road Improvements” project.

Carpenter Creek

Carpenter Creek is a tributary to the Fox River located within the Village of Carpentersville. Much of it was identified as having eroded stream banks that contributed sediment to the river. The project required studying and remapping the existing Zone A floodplain, addressing stream erosion and reducing the flood elevations.

Improvements to Carpenter Creek included approximately 4,600 linear feet of bank stabilization, grade control structures, two-stage channels, wetland creation, and over nine acres of native vegetation.

The project also received FEMA approval to revise the regulatory floodplain maps, eliminating more than 40 properties from the floodplain, thus allowing property owners to forgo carrying flood insurance.

Rich Harvest Farms was the host site of the 2017 NCAA Division I Men and Women’s Golf Championships. The improved US 30
intersection and roundabout effectively handled heavy traffic from university officials, players and spectators over a two week period. The efficient flow of traffic into and out of Rich Harvest Farms was noticed and mentioned by local officials and area residents throughout the tournaments.

US 30, Granart Road and Dugan Road Improvements

As part of an Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) study, it was determined that any interim improvements to the US 30 at Dugan Road intersection in the Village of Sugar Grove would not sustain the predicted increases in regional traffic over the next 20 years. Concurrent to the IDOT study, a project team of TADI, HR Green, and Kimley-Horn and Associates was contracted by the Village of Sugar Grove to conduct a parallel study for the realignment of Granart Road and Dugan Road south of US 30.

This ultimately led to a multi-phase project which included the design and construction of a modern, multi-lane roundabout at the realigned intersection of Granart Road and Dugan Road.

The project has enhanced safety and improved traffic flow at two previously dangerous and congested intersections. The improvements included additional channelization on US 30 and realignment of the intersection to provide additional separation from US 30 and the BNSF at-grade crossing.

A multi-lane roundabout was constructed at the realigned intersection, one of Illinois’ first.
