City of Des Moines, IA selects HR Green to provide Professional Engineering Services for the Replacement of Two Major Stormwater Pump Stations
The City of Des Moines recently selected HR Green to provide preliminary site investigation and conceptual design services for the replacement of two major stormwater pumping stations in the downtown area. These pumping stations convey interior drainage over the City’s flood protection levees during high water levels on the Des Moines River. The East 1st Street & East Market Street pump station serves the thriving East Village commercial district of downtown, which stretches from the Des Moines River eastward to the State Capitol complex. The SE 1st / 4th Street and Van Buren pump stations will be combined into a single new pump station to serve areas east of SE 1st Street and south of the Des Moines River. Both pumping stations will be located in highly visible areas, requiring architectural design to blend them with their context. CMBA / Smith Metzger Architecture will provide architectural services as a subconsultant to HR Green. Both projects also include storm sewer replacement or new storm sewer pipeline installations. Anticipated construction cost for both pump stations and related storm sewer improvements is approximately $17 million. HR Green’s services will include environmental site assessment, conceptual design, and public information assistance. Final design and construction phase services will likely follow in 2017 and 2018.
“We’re honored to play a role in the long-term protection of downtown Des Moines,” said Project Manager Chad Mason. “These are exciting times for downtown Des Moines, and the City’s stormwater pumping stations are part of a critical, behind-the-scenes infrastructure that supports ongoing revitalization.”
