McHenry County Roundabout Project Wins Pair of Awards
The McHenry County Division of Transportation recently received the American Public Works Association — Fox Valley Branch Project of the Year award. The project also received the 2015 American Council of Engineering Companies – Illinois Merit Award
HR Green was responsible for the design and construction engineering of the Johnsburg Road Widening Project in coordination with the Village of Johnsburg and McHenry County Division of Transportation. This project was McHenry County Division of Transportation’s first design and construction of a roundabout.
During the design phase of the project, HR Green was responsible for preparing the Project Design Report, contract plans, specifications and estimates. During the construction phase of the project, HR Green was responsible for stakeholder coordination including a pre-construction Open House presentation, weekly door-to-door coordination with residents and businesses, coordination with the Village of Johnsburg regarding sanitary sewer modifications, general construction issues and resident and business concerns brought to the attention of the Village and the creation of a project website with weekly updates to its email contact list.
The project website: www.johnsburgroad.com, served as a conduit for communication with residents, businesses and the community, allowing interested individuals to provide their email addresses so they could get weekly, and in some cases daily, project updates. The website included information such as: the project overview, a photo gallery, project maps, percentage of project completion, press releases, frequently asked questions and a Contact Us section, which provided interested citizens with project information at the tips of their fingers. Facebook and Twitter were also used to update the stakeholders when project e-blasts were distributed.
During construction a webcam was also added to the project website that provided a new photo of the construction site every 15 minutes. At the project’s completion, these pictures were put together into a time-lapse video of the project’s construction.
HR Green was able to assist the Village of Johnsburg in securing an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) Grant to complete the project with streetscape and safety enhancements. The $813,130 ITEP Grant provided for the installation of sidewalks, crosswalks, pedestrian lighting, landscaping, benches and other amenities along Johnsburg Road from Spring Grove Road through the new modern roundabout.
The improvements are part of a $7 million project partially funded by a $2,564,000 Congestion Mitigation Air Quality (CMAQ) Grant and $1,500,000 Federal Surface Transportation Program (STP) funds secured by the County and HR Green. Road improvements included the widening of Johnsburg Road to three lanes (one travel lane in each direction and a continuous center left turn lane from Route 31 to Chapel Hill Road), lowering the elevation of the hill immediately west of Riverside Drive, installation of traffic signals at Riverside Drive and Spring Grove Road, and the incorporation of a single lane modern roundabout at the intersection of Chapel Hill Road, Johnsburg Road, and St. John’s Avenue.
