Nevada, Iowa
Nevada, Iowa’s city government had been housed in a structure originally built in the 1920’s as the show room and service garage for an automobile dealership. The City Council recognized in 2005 that the municipal offices had long outgrown this makeshift city hall and began the process of planning for a new facility. The Council’s goals were to provide work space that would enhance efficiency and professionalism among city staff and promote good morale; to enhance citizen convenience and embody local pride in the community, and to reinforce the City’s commitment to Nevada’s historic commercial district.
The site selected for the new Nevada City Hall and Public Safety Facility is behind the site of the old City Hall. When the new City Hall was completed, the old City Hall was razed to create a landscaped parking area and forecourt connecting the new facility with the historic Sixth Street commercial district. Brick set in a variety of patterns and trimmed with cast stone was selected for the building’s exterior to reflect the character of the downtown district.
The new Nevada City Hall and Public Safety Facility provides ample space for the City Administrator, the City Clerk, the Buildings Department, the Fire Chief and the Police Department. Space on the basement level has been set aside for police training and emergency management as well as for secure storage, and could become future expansion space for the municipal government. The Council Chamber is equipped with audio/visual equipment to promote participation in public meetings and to facilitate the broadcast and recording of proceedings.
