It was 1913 when 23-year old Howard Green opened a consulting engineering office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He quickly established himself as a respected civil engineer and was soon immersed in the projects of the day – a river wall for the Cedar River and streets and roads across the state. The company he founded looks back with pride on the accomplishments that have placed it in the forefront of consulting.

Howard R. Green Company has contributed its expertise to meet a wide array of community needs. Designers of some of the earliest sewage treatment plants during the first decades of the 20th century, the company became part of sanitary engineering in its infancy. The company grew considerably during World War II to accommodate the design and construction of large military facilities in four states. Back to its normal size in the fifties and sixties, the company became a major participant in the economic growth that transitioned Iowa to a manufacturing state. Industrial facilities, airports and highways demanded the attention of the company.

With the death of its founder in 1969, the company marked the end of an era. In the years that have followed we have built on the strong foundation he left behind. Over the years, our capabilities and geographies have evolved and broadened considerably, but our advice remains rooted in solid design principles that strive to make the most of natural and human resources. The firm continues to assist its public and private clients by providing diverse services, as our staff employ a distinctive set of tools and techniques that have been honed to meet the needs and challenges of our clients today.

Howard R. Green Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Green Companies, Inc.
